Undergorund construction nowadays imposes huge requirements during the realization. Whether it is a road tunnel on a highway outside the city or a tunnel in an urban environment, tunnel design is considered a challenging geotechnical asignment. When designing a tunnel, it is impossible to rely on only one approach due to the unknown environment in which it is built. The most commonly used are three approaches (empirical, numerical analysis and observational method) in one word called the integral design method. The road tunnel "Grič" was used in this paper as an example for the implementation of excavation design and stabilization of tunnel excavation according to three approaches. The parameters of the rock mass and prognostic support systems based on rock mass classifications were obtained by empirical approach. Then numerical analysis with empirically adopted parameters was performed to obtain stress and strain states around the underground opening during excavation and support instalation. The results of the numerical analysis were acceptable values , so the empirical recommendations were defined as final.Sincethese are prognostic quantities, a geotechnical monitoring program, which includes observations and measurementsis planned. If necessary, verification or correction of the support system is performed.
